General Scientific Company (GSC)

A History in Advanced Optical Technology

The history of GSC, SurgiTel's parent company, stretches back to the 1930 s tracing its origins to two optical manufacturers:
the original General Scientific Corporation and Argus Cameras, Inc.

Argus Cameras, founded in 1936, was a large supplier of commercial cameras and optical imaging equipment for the U.S. Government.  The optics division of Argus was later spun off into Perfect Optics, Inc. in 1977.

General Scientific Corporation, an optical component and assembly manufacturer was founded in 1932 and based in Illinois.  General Scientifc Corporation was purchased by Perfect Optics in 1989 and moved to our current location in Ann Arbor, MI.  The combined company became a full service supplier of optical components and assemblies to various the automotive, aerospace, production, and medical companies. Perfect Optics came under new ownership in 1991 and was renamed General Scientific Corporation.

Today, GSC continues to be a full service optical manufacturer offering customers quality products at competitive prices. We supply our customers with high quality optics ranging from complex lens assemblies to electro-optical instruments to off-the-shelf optical components. Our customer base is still as diverse as we continue to service many different fields with our many years of optical experience.

SurgiTel

Dedicated to Clinical Vision & Ergonomics

In 1992, GSC decided to enter the medical optics market with its own line of surgical telescopes sold under the SurgiTel brand name.  SurgiTel s primary focus upon entry into the clinical market was to provide our customers with a visually superior, but more importantly, an ergonomically improved product.

Before launching the SurgiTel product line, extensive research and customer feedback revealed to us that while traditional surgical telescopes helped clinicians to see better, the overall design of these telescopes ultimately caused these users to work with harmful neck postures. With that direct customer information, SurgiTel patented multiple designs to exclusively provide medical and dental professionals with surgical telescopes built with both vision and ergonomics in mind.
